01

The rain in NYC has finally been useful for something.  It looks like beautiful  jewels on the leaves of my Fire Escape Farm.

02

A few weeks ago, I purchased an Earth Box.  Adding pounds of heavy, wet, organic soil…and fertilizer…and dolomite…was fun, kind of.  Luckily I had a gorgeous helper.  :-)  We named her Eartha Kitt.

03

This is her blanket which prevents her from getting weeds.  Ingenious.

04

And here she is freshly planted.  From the back row, left to right:  basil, patio tomatoes, and cauliflower.  Front row:  jelly melon (no idea), marigolds for biological insect repellant, and strawberries.

06

Eartha Kitt’s best child is…the cauliflower.  It may take over Brooklyn.

07

Note the jelly melon ladder grip device.  He made that all by himself.

08

From scrawny…

09

To sensational.

10

One small step towards really beautiful and really delicious…real food.

XXX,

SCB :-)

    great stuff!

  1. I love your blog. Everything about it is beautiful, funny, thought provoking and genuine (just like you). Your photography is spectacular, and even though I never venture into Carroll Gardens, I sometimes hear about the great restaurants there and I know that you are loving it. Keep up the good work:-)))

Glad to see you back posting on your blog. I was a little worried about you. Your last post that I replied to you sounded so fed up with the rat race. And who would blame you for that. Its nice to have dreams and to be able to achieve them. The fire escape farm seems like a good start. Did you get any strawberries yet? mmmmmm strawberries!

    • MIKE!! Fed up? YES! But that leads to good stuff. Like the mini farm! But I have been informed that strawberries don’t come the first year. I can’t beleive the guy at the gardening center didn’t tell me that! He seemed rather…stoned. Luckily the farmers markets have been bringing the local strawberries down from upstate NY – they are good.

How’s the photography – have you added more stuff? Or did you explode Flickr’s memory threshhold? Haha! :) Oh, and the Brooklyn fire dept says I can’t have my Earth Box on the fire escape – hmmmm, sounds like I might have to reason with those boys in person. ;)

I was wondering about the box on the fire escape. What are you going to do if they make you move it. I did not know about the strawberries and the first year. Also the guy at the gardening center sounds like he was growing and sampling some of his home grown plants. :)

Having a blast with the photo stuff and glade to hear your not going to let life run you down.

Now more pictures of wholesome food. If I can’t eat healthier at least I can look at pictures of good food and pretend. :-D

    • I don’t know Mike – no one takes my Eartha Kitt!! From that window I can see that everyone in Brooklyn has something on their fire escape. The FDNY came because my landlord set off the smoke alarm and I think they have a duty to mention stuff, but I doubt they will follow up. Seriously, the pathway to get out is totally clear!

OK, wholesome food porn soon. I’ve been cooking and eating SO healthy that I thought it might bore the pants off people, you all seemed to enjoy decadence.

The food looks great though, very camera friendly, so I will share the creations in posts to come! :-)

  2. That’s so cool! I’ve been thinking we should be able to grow something on our porch but I don’t have much of a green thumb… this looks doable though! thx :-)
