I’m hooked on Red Hook.  I visited recently, and that only made me realize that I need to go back.  A lot.  I need to shop at Fairway, I need to eat a sandwich from DeFonte’s and I need to have dinner at The Good Fork…but in the meantime…I checked out Pier 41’s garden center.

They have gorgeous plants and flowers - tons of varieties - fun to just walk around and look at them even if you have no idea what you would possibly do with them if purchased.  That’s how I feel.

Here’s a Red Hook bee, doing his bee business.

If all this urban nature has you thinking, man, I could really use a slice of key lime pie right about now…then you’re in luck.

Red Hook…it may be the new addiction.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you.  ;-)

Today I went back to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  It’s like a magnet.

I’m hanging out in Carroll Gardens unable to stop thinking about all the gorgeous flora in Prospect Park and the only thing separating us is a quick ride on the B71 bus.  So, off I went.

The Cranford Rose Garden is a sprawling, manicured, fragrant rose buffet.

Many varieties are still in bloom, as seen here, but 90% of them have gone to the great rose garden in the sky.

This looked like a bridal bouquet on a branch.  Just cut and carry down the aisle.

OK, this really speaks to my macro lust.  I’m not doing the photography justice!!

I need a longer lens.  And a tripod.  And an assistant.

succ1.jpg

Beautiful succulent.  I love succulents, Not sure why.

I think it’s the word… succulent… mmmm.

fern1.jpg

Wow!  Ferns dressed up in pink and green - so preppy.

I decided to walk back because Park Slope is so pretty.

I took a great shot of a beautiful row of brownstones, but somehow deleted it by accident  :-(

Now about that assistant… :-)

Brooklyn is for flower lovers!

I am ashamed to say that I have never - before today - visited the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  What was I waiting for!!!

2.jpg

The perfect day to visit, bright blue sky and warm.

These lovely blooms look ready for a Monet watercolor, too bad he isn’t around.

3.jpg

The hanging wisteria were incredible - and big, dark wisteria trees heavy with purple cascading flowers - many varieties to see.

5.jpg

The Cherry Walk and the Cherry Esplanade are breathtaking.

Surprising lack of crowds considering the perfect Sunday afternoon weather.

6.jpg

From the brochure: “more than 40 varieties of Oriental flowering cherries make Brooklyn Botanic Garden one of the world’s best cherry-viewing sites outside of Japan.”

7.jpg

The cherry trees were lush and incredible and the park offers soft green grass where you can lie down and stare up at your flower ceiling.

8.jpg

Continue along the path and peek around this gorgeous gate to see the Native Flora Garden, which is woodsy and cool.

 9.jpg

Make sure to stop by the Japanese Hill-and-Pond garden.

It is an oasis of calm and tranquility.  You won’t believe you’re still in Brooklyn.

10.jpg

And if you aren’t convinced that Brooklyn is for lovers, just ask these turtles.

11.jpg

Try to get to the BBG before the blossoms have all fallen, or go while they are falling and stand under the cherry blossom petal snow, it’s a beautiful feeling.

More posts to come very soon!  While I sort out my photographic equipment dilemmas, please enjoy this photo taken by one of my most favorite Brooklynites.

ferdinandos.jpg

I love this place. Ferdinando’s Focacceria Ristorante.

It’s at 151 Union Street, just west of Hicks, owned by Frank Buffa who has been around for 35 years.

 frank.jpg

From Sicily and with the palest blue eyes to prove it, he told me the best dish on his menu is the Pasta con Sarde, pasta with sardines, wild fennel and pignoli.

When I asked him why he said “because I like it the best”.

salad.jpg

This is what the tastiest $5 salad in town looks like.

It is a fresh mix of lettuces, marinated cauliflower, onions, carrots, tomatoes, and little pieces of garlic…an Italian antioxidant extravaganza.

It is perfectly dressed in oil, vinegar and italian herbs and spices, delicious.

  riceball.jpg

Here it is.  Admittedly not a great photo, the rice ball (also $5) is best witnessed in person.  It is gooey, rich and one of my favorite things in Brooklyn.

Finely chopped meat and peas are hiding in the middle, then the rice, then the whole thing is fried and blanketed in ricotta cheese, slivers of parmigiano reggiano and served with tangy tomato sauce.  I can only eat half and take the rest home for breakfast.

The restaurant was recently used as a location in Scorcese’s The Departed.

Frank proudly displays photos of Leonardo DiCaprio and a wall full of many other stars.

He tells me that Commissioner Kelly eats there once a month.

  frankbuffa.jpg

When Martin Scorcese came to look at the restaurant as a possible location, Frank told him… “you shoot the movie here, you win the Oscar.  Everyone that comes here is lucky.”

This is a rare restaurant that has no downside (that I can find).  The food is authentic Italian, reasonably priced, and delicious.  Nicoletta calls you sweetie while taking your order.  There is a plastic prosciutto hanging above the kitchen, a baby Jesus and crucifix next to that and a little back garden for nice weather dining.  What more could you want.
